Here's my running buddy. Not as good as my good friends I used to have in IL to run with, but he does a good job of keeping me company and I enjoy having him with me. Wish I had a pic of him and I geared up for a run. Well I'll have to get one!
Well after 9 weeks of building up to it I finally ran 30 continuous minutes today. That is, as continuous as they can get with a dog that feels his only place to relieve himself (number one and number two numerous times) is on the pavement-while I am running. Even when I let him out beforehand for plenty of time! That of course gives me a bit of a break. I decided to drive my route later which I said I wouldn't do (last time was disappointing) to gauge the distance and figure out my time. Around 11 minute miles. I was hoping for at least 10.5 but that gives me even more room for improvement right?
The good thing is I only have had one twinge of the shin splints return last Wednesday and again on Friday. I took it real easy on Friday and took Saturday off just to give it extra rest. Well at least a little, I still worked all weekend which entails a lot of walking horses to and from turnouts, some close to the main barn, some pretty far away. But at least it wasn't the stress of running on the bone.
It also rained again while I was running. Seems to be a common theme lately. I go out, it lightly sprinkles and then while I run it turns to sheeting rain. When I get done running and my clothes are soaked through lo and behold the rain stops and clears up! WOW! This must be a test of my dedication as we even had SNOW and ice one time as well!
Well I am not giving up and am finally becoming addicted to running again!
Speaking of such Tarzan my dog and running buddy is WAY more addicted to running than even I am. If he so much as SEES me in my running clothes he follows me incessantly around the house whining until we leave. Poor guy though. He is 10 and he doesn't have the endurance he used to. This dog could (and has many times) outrun me for 12 miles and not so much as slowed to be NEXT to me until mile 10. It is sad to see him getting older and struggling with a half hour run of less than 3 miles. :( He has had some good runs though and I will continue to take him as long as he physically can handle it. I am thinking once the weather warms up that I will probably just take him the first 15 minutes and then drop him back at home. That is what we had to start doing with Kaymin (our other Dalmation) when he got older. They are bred to run, and it is in their brains even when their body is old and won't comply! At least he can still enjoy a lot of good walks as so far he is very healthy still and doesn't have any noticeable pain while walking or running.
I would like to run a race but it seems most of my weekends are taken by working. Hopefully I can get a 5K in this summer (and even more hopefully Niels will join me - he is getting a new set of custom orthotics tomorrow). My goal is to run a half marathon in 2010 or 2011 depending on how my training comes along. What I really want to do, is run a half marathon in the Redwoods in California. I've wanted to do that since I started running over 12 years ago. My guess is that it probably won't happen beings how I live all the way on the other side of the country now! But still a 1/2 marathon will be good. It is the only distance up to the marathon that I actually haven't entered as a race on its own.

You go Tarzan... ohh and Lis too!! Just kidding, nice work. You have much better endurance that I do, I can barely post the trot for 15 minute without getting winded. Keep it up and I will come and watch you run in the redwoods. (Maybe I will bring a horse and go ride along side you). :)
Hey...I am so glad that you are enjoying running again and that your shin splints are behaving. Those are painful!!!!!!
Tell Tarzan I miss the days when his owner would run my legs off so I would get Tarzan to keep me company while running/walking alone!
I liked the slide show.
Hey Wonder Woman! I wish I had your drive. I really do. I think that I might like running if I really gave it a shot. My SIL is going to let me use her single Jogger and I'm going to try to start. But I do wish I had a partner, or even a dog to do it with... I'm kinda chicken about running the streets of Midvale alone ;)
awesome Job Lisa. You rock. It's one good thing about the new dog is that Jeremy says he will be a good running buddy for me. I hope it works out when Scout is a little older. We'll have to train for the SLC 1/2 for next year and we all can do it together. You, me, Kris, Laura, and whoever else wants to do. It would be tons of fun
